...a new study that was just released by OTX Research and The Intelligence Group on teens’ self image. according to the research, teens are happy!
they’re willing to spend a lot of money on their looks, however:
- 81% of teens said they were at least somewhat happy and over a third (36%) say they are very happy
- 61% of teens said they worry about their looks, and 48% said they compare the way they look with friends and peers.
- 50% of teens said looks and physical appearance were very important when it comes to ‘being respected by others’, but only 33% said it was important for ‘being liked by others’

And who is the most important influence when it comes to how teens feel about themselves? Not mom or dad, not even their friends….it’s their boyfriend or girlfriend (if they have one). Interestingly, religion comes second:

- Your religion (82%)
- Your friends (79%)
- Your parents (74%)
- Your teacher(s) (72%)

It's a better choice to wait until you're married...
CNN reports at least 1 in 4 teen girls ages 14 to 19 in America has a sexually transmitted disease.
Who has an STD?
- 50% of black teen girls
- 20% of white teen girls
- 20% of Mexican-American teen girls
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted the research. It is heartbreaking to realize that so many teen girls have made the moral mistake of sex before marriage and are suffering because of it.
According to The Barna Group and LifeWay Research, 1 in 2 teens in America attend church. But sadly some of these church-going teens are also included in the statistic of STD carriers.

Daily Challenges
( | Make a commitment to your group to attend your 3d Group / Life Group every week. There’s value in meeting regularly, as we learned this morning!
( | Look around your room/house and find something that you can share with someone else, a friend, someone in your 3d Group/Life Group in need.
( | Meet a friend for prayer at school each day this week. Doesn’t have to be long, just a couple minutes @ lunch or before school starts. You don’t even have to close your eyes when you pray if you don’t want to. Pray every day this week with each and report back next week on how it went.
( | Have some friends from your Life Group / 3d Group and some others over to your house this week just for good hang time (aka. fellowship).

Overnighter Video
So...I had the privilege to spend a little time with Jake & Josh, the Emcees of the National Youth Ministry Conference as they filled some shots in our student ministry rooms for this rap video. The pool table shots & the ping-pong shots are our room. I'm the one hitting the ball back to Jake. My claim to pseudo-fame. Pretty cool!

Daily Challenges February 3rd-9th
| Last we talked about Jesus being our teacher and how we need to read what he taught. We also need to let his teaching READ US and be open to areas where his countercultural teaching will challenge us to change the way we live. So…go to the sermon on the mount again this week, in Matthew chapters 5-7. Read that section each day this week in your daily time with God and more than read it, let IT read YOU.
| Explore the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John) this week and keep a list in a journal of all the countercultural and radical stuff you find Jesus teaching.
| Reflect on what area of your life you need to open up to God that you are currently keeping hidden. Jesus wants ALL of us, he is countercultural and will transform every area of our lives for the better. We just need to let him and that’s hard work! Reflect on where you need to let Jesus in.
| Start a discussion with friends about this radical stuff that Jesus did in this passage (i.e. welcoming children, telling a guy to sell everything, saying it’s hard for rich people to get into the kingdom, etc.) @ the lunch table or on the bus or when you’re hanging out this week. Think about what it means for you and your group of friends.
